Hand Printed Open Back Crop Top DIY: How To Make a Perfect Summer Hipster Look

Hand Printed Open Back Crop Top DIY

Are you ready to properly ventilate your back when the heat wave will strike? I am now – and so will you after reading this post. As promised in my previous post, here comes my open back crop top DIY! It was such a cool (both in terms of easiness and temperature) DIY that I made it complicated by pulling out two projects instead of one. I bet you have already guessed it from the complicated, SEO optimized title. Ladies (and maybe gentlemen), today we will cut backs open and print kitties by hand.
But before we dive into an exciting world of snapping scissors and the Behind Of Scene section, I must share with you the tops that were my DIY inspirations:

…as well as some other news.

First of all, there will be no DIY the next week (and no fashion inspiration post this Friday). The life has kicked in, and I will need some time to enjoy its sweet and tender push.

Second of all, my birthday is coming next week! Hurray! You are very welcome to leave your warm wishes in the comments!

Ok, now let’s dive in.

How To Get The Look

To show off the result of the DIY in the best possible way I pulled together a perfect (everything I make is so perfect) summer hipster outfit:

  • T-shirt: second hand DIY
  • Skirt: second hand
  • Hat: H&M
  • Creepers: T.U.K. Shoes

Fashion Brings People Together… When No Bra Is Involved

Looking at the pretty crop top laying flat on the floor while the paint was drying, I thought: “This hipsta needs some proper decorations!” So, when we went outside to take pictures I did my best to find background that looked shabby and colorful and was not too far away from my house. We went down the street for a couple of  blocks and found the perfectly cracked walls painted in intense emerald. A couple of blocks included also about fifty thousands of decline in annual income, and this explained the shabby look. In this land the cats were skinnier, the fences crappier, and the people friendlier.

When I started my “performance”, the street that was empty before all of the sudden became crowded. The locals looked through the window and went outside to watch my fashion show closer. Somebody turned on the radio, and I danced to the epique song of Ace Of Base “The Sign”. The sun was shining, the wind was blowing, and the locals were smiling.

We became friends. We exchanged no words but Salut and Bonne journée, but I felt in my heart that these people appreciated my style and my sense of fashion.. or maybe they just liked the lack of my bra.

Yep, I again was wearing no bra. Skipping it seems to be so natural when you wear an open back top. The only problem is that you cannot lift your hands too high. Which I forgot about. Like, totally. Oh well. I don’t know how many times my boobies enjoyed the sunshine. Probably quite a lot. But at least I got good pictures… aaaand made friends with the whole block just like that.

Fashion brings people together… when the bra option is skipped.

DIY Steps:

  1. For this DIY you will need:
    • a regular or oversized tee;
    • scissors;
    • a measuring tape
  2. Put the t-shit on and measure how much you want to crop it from the bottom.
  3. Lay the t-shirt flat and align the bottom lines of its front and back.
    Cut off the measured amount from the bottom.
  4. Cut off the label on the back if any.
  5. Fold the back of the t-shirt in two by aligning the side seams.
    Make a cut along the folding line.

And now wear it! Or better use it for the second part of the DIY!

DIY Steps:

  1. For this DIY you will need:
    • a t-shirt;
    • Tulip fabric paint in contrasting color;
    • a plastic cover or any other flat piece of fabric;
    • a piece of cardboard slightly smaller than the t-shirt;
    • scissors;
    • a kitchen sponge or any other sponge;
    • a sheet of paper;
    • a pen;
    • X-ACTO knife;
    • a computer (optional);
  2. Prepare a drawing you want to put on your t-shirt or find it on the Internet.
    Make sure it has thick borders, because the borders will be the area where you will apply the paint in the next step. I used this kitty icon, and you can download it from my website here in case the icon link is broken.
    Trace it from the screen or print it out on a printer.
    Advice: if the drawing you chose is too small for your garment, zoom it in your browser by pressing Ctrl+Z and trace it from the screen.
  3. Make the stencil by cutting out the outline in the traced drawing using X-ACTO knife.
    Leave small uncut areas in the outline to connect the inner part of the drawing with the outer part. For example, I made these connections on the tips of the kitty’s, on the end of the whiskers and on the top of the eyes.
  4. Cut off a small piece from the kitchen sponge if you do not have a dedicated painting sponge.
  5. Put the cardboard inside the t-shirt to prevent the paint leaking to the back of the t-shirt.
    Put the stencil on top of the t-shirt in the middle of the front part. Make sure the t-shirt is absolutely flat.
    Apply the paint with a sponge on top of the stencil.
  6. Let it dry flat for a couple of hours (look up the time in the paint instructions).

Wear it!
